Storytelling for Athletes: How to Find Your Narrative
Every athlete has a story. Most never tell it. Here's how to find the narrative that makes people care about you.
The three-part athlete story
Every great athlete story has the same bones: where you came from, what stood in your way, and what you did about it. The obstacle is the story — without it, you're just a result.
Find your recurring tension
The best narratives have a tension that keeps coming back: the underdog from a small town, the late bloomer, the one who came back from injury. Name yours and return to it often. Audiences love a recurring character arc.
Let the audience in on the stakes
Tell people what you're trying to achieve before you achieve it. A goal declared in public becomes a story they're invested in. Win or lose, they'll come back to find out what happened.
